Development of transport links between Russia and OIC countries discussed in Istanbul

Istanbul recently hosted the Second Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Conference of Transport Ministers, which was attended by a Russian delegation led by State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Dmitry Zverev.

On the sidelines of the event, the Russian minister gave a presentation about the country’s experience in developing transport infrastructure and logistics, with a focus on the development of international transport corridors, increasing regional connectivity, implementing digital solutions in the transport industry, and creating favourable conditions for attracting investments.

During his speech, Dmitry Zverev also took the opportunity to invite OIC representatives to the International Transport and Logistics Forum in St. Petersburg on 1–3 April, which is set to be the largest event the industry has ever seen in Russia. The Forum will bring together government representatives, business leaders, and international partners for an open and constructive dialogue, and to come up with practical solutions for the development of the transport industry in Russia and Eurasia. The Forum is organized by the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, with the support of the Russian government, and will be operated by the Roscongress Foundation.

As an observer state in the OIC, Russia consistently develops practical cooperation with member countries in the transport and logistics sector. As such, special emphasis is placed on integrating infrastructure projects, developing multimodal transport, and realizing Eurasia’s transit potential.

The Conference programme included a series of bilateral meetings between the Russian delegation and the heads of transport ministries from OIC countries. The talks with Minister of Transport of Syria Yarub Badr, for example, touched on the prospects for cooperation and preparations for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. Meanwhile, the meeting with the Minister of Communications of Pakistan, Abdul Aleem Khan, dealt with the launch of a test container shipment along the International North–South Transport Corridor and the development of bilateral relations. And the discussion with Deputy Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications of Bahrain, Fatima Al Dhaen, mainly concerned joint projects and issues of cooperation.
