Russia and Mongolia expanding cooperation in transport sector

The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation hosted a meeting between State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Dmitry Zverev and Minister of Road and Transport of Mongolia Borkhuu Delgersaikhan. The most noteworthy outcome of the meeting was the creation of a working group to implement transport projects between Russia and Mongolia.

One of the most pressing topics in the talks between the Russian and Mongolian sides was the development potential of the Russia–Mongolia–China economic corridor, a vital link that would increase freight transport volumes between the countries and take full advantage of Mongolia’s transit potential. The meeting participants discussed the importance of overhauling and modernizing transport infrastructure, updating Ulaanbaatar Railbus locomotives and rolling stock, and the possibility of implementing a project to connect the Bagakhangai–Khushigiin khundii line to the main Ulaanbaatar Railbus route.

Following the discussion, the sides agreed on a late March 2026 delivery date for a technical and economic feasibility study on the modernization of the central line of the Russia–Mongolia–China Economic Corridor. The final agreement is expected to be signed at the International Transport and Logistics Forum in St. Petersburg on 1–3 April 2026.

Other topics of discussion at the meeting included cooperation in road transport between Russia and Mongolia, the resumption of operations at the Irkutsk State Transport University branch in Ulaanbaatar, and, in particular, the possibility of Russian construction companies’ involvement in the implementation of transport infrastructure projects in Mongolia.
