The State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg is one of the largest historical museums in Russia.
Its collection contains over 1.3 million exhibits that reflect the history of the city on the Neva from its founding to the present day.
The centrepiece of the museum is the Peter and Paul Fortress – a unique monument of history, architecture, and fortification art from the 18th to 20th centuries. The dominant feature of this architectural ensemble is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, one of the symbols of St. Petersburg and the burial place of the Imperial House of Romanov.

The Peter and Paul Fortress grounds within Zayachy Island are open to visitors from 8:00 to 20:30 daily, and the island closes at 21:00. The actual Peter and Paul Fortress is open to visitors from 09:50 to 19:30 daily, and the fortress closes at 20:00.

Museum exhibits are closed on 1 April (a non-working day at the museum).

Due to restoration work, access to the grounds is completely closed along the Neva River and the fortress walls facing it, including the Ioannovsky Ravelin, the Gosudarev, Naryshkin, and Trubetskoy Bastions, and the Nevskaya and Yekaterininskaya curtain walls, except for Komendantskaya Wharf. Zayachy Island Beach is completely closed.
Please present your badge at the museum ticket office for free admission. A badge is required for museum visits without a guided tour.
