“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players…” These words from Shakespeare became the epigraph to the production of People’s Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov. The director offers an original take on one of the most popular operas, which never fails to touch people’s hearts with the intensity of its dramatic love story and the vibrant emotionality of its music. The truly tragic story about a theatre director who kills his wife in a jealous rage (based on a real case that Leoncavallo immortalized in his opera) has been given a metaphorical interpretation in Alexandrov’s production. Through the imagery and rhetorical devices of commedia dell’arte (an early form of professional theatre), the director has created a timeless story about the life of the theatre. In it, stage conventions and off-stage reality are so inextricably intertwined that they cannot be separated from each other. The genres of comedy and tragedy parody each other in this production. The everyday setting in the first act gives way to wild colours and exquisitely stylized costumes of the second (by production designer, People’s Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Okunev). Theatricality as a principle of existence prevails not only on the stage, but spills out into the auditorium too.
Admission is by ticket only.
Tickets can be purchased at the theatre box office, or online.
